Patrice Louise Rushen nació en Los Angeles, California, un 30 de Septiembre de 1954. Demostró su potencial musical, siendo considerada una niña prodigio. En su adolescencia, ganó el prestigioso Monterey Jazz Festival de 1972. Obtuvo su grado de Música en la University of Southern California. Su primer lanzamiento discográfico fue el álbum Prelusion, en 1974, bajo etiqueta Prestige Records, que en su mayoría eran instrumentales jazz. Siguió explorando la veta jazzística en los discos Before the Dawn (1975) y Shoot It Out (1977), en los que fusionó ese estilo con r&b, jazz y funk. Sería ese disco el último para Prestige, antes de firmar con Elektra Records para lanzar en 1978 su disco Patrice, en el que orientó su estilo musical a algo más pop y R&B.

En el verano de 1972, durante el legendario WattStax Festival, Rufus Thomas, que entonces tenía 55 años, hizo que miles de jóvenes se derrumbaran en un baile frenético en el LA Memorial Coliseum. El adolescente más viejo del mundo se volvió loco.

Rufus fue uno de los grupos más respetados en los años 70 y 80. La carismática voz del cantante principal Chaka Khan fue su carta de presentación con una maravillosa porción de soul y funk.

Las Vibraciones eran un grupo de soul en la tradición de los Temptations y los Delfonics. Originalmente conocidos como The Jayhawks, The Vibrations con una serie de éxitos menores a finales de los 60, se disolvieron temporalmente justo antes de grabar Taking A New Step. Eventualmente se convirtieron en un grupo de club nocturno a mediados de la década de 1970, antes de disolver oficialmente en 1976. Este es un tributo maravilloso a una banda que logró moverse a lo largo de tres décadas. Este es un fabuloso álbum de soul.

Tata Vega vocalista de r&b y urban contemporary se mudó a Los Ángeles desde su ciudad natal de Long Island en los años 70 y firmó con Motown en 1976. Publicó tres álbumes para el sello a finales de los 70, este Lp fue su segundo en Motown, Totally Tata.

Adventures in Paradise, álbum que fue hecho a medida para el tipo de formato de radio de los 70 en este trabajo Minnie Riperton contó con el productor Stewart Levine. En la icónica portada del álbum, se ve a Minnie sentada junto a un león. Aunque la sesión de fotos del álbum real fue tranquila, las cosas se descontrolaron en una sesión de fotos promocional con un león diferente. El animal se abalanzó sobre Minnie, afortunadamente, el domador del animal estaba en el set y el león fue dominado rápidamente. Fue por esta época cuando Riperton descubrió que tenía cáncer.

Compositor, arreglista, productor y director de orquesta Quincy Jones. El álbum Sounds… And Stuff Like That es una de las mejores obras de Jones. Repleto de estrellas proporciona un toque exquisito a un paisaje sonoro exuberante. Colaboran Nicolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, un Luther Vandross desconocido, un Chaka Khan poco conocida, Patti Austin y Gwen Guthrie subestimados … El disco fue el rey en 1978 donde Jones incluyó algo fresco y memorable dentro de la esfera del jazz con la hermosa «Tell me a bedtime story» de Herbie Hancock.
